The Jews of Morris and Sussex: Early Settlers, Synagogues, Resort Towns, and Lake Communities
Photographs from the Collection at the Jewish Historical Society of MetroWest. The Jews of Morris and Sussex: Early Settlers, Synagogues, Resort Towns, and Lake Communities traces the growth of Jewish life in the market towns of Morristown and Newton, the mining towns of Dover and Franklin, the farming communities of Mount Freedom and Pine Brook, summer resorts that became year-round communities in Lake Hopatcong, Lake Hiawatha, and White Meadow Lake, and synagogue congregations that grew up as a result of an influx of Jews looking for more affordable housing after World War II. Jewish history in this area dates as far back as the Civil War. Along with its synagogue buildings, Morristown, Newton, Franklin, Pine Brook, Mount Freedom, and Dover established congregational cemeteries more than 100 years ago. The photographs, memorabilia, and assorted historical documents featured in this exhibition are in the Jewish Historical Society of MetroWest’s Archives. They represent the institutional records of 22 synagogue congregations, one Hebrew day school, numerous private collections, and the Rabbinical College of America, which is located in Morristown. Such collections enable us to document Jewish life in these two counties. There are two publications related to this exhibition: The Jews of Morris and Sussex: A Brief History and Source Guide, compiled by JHSMW Curator/Outreach Director Linda Forgosh, details the archival collections held by the JHSMW that document Jewish life in Morris and Sussex Counties of New Jersey. This book was published by the JHSMW in 2003 and is available from the Society for $10 per copy. Jews of Morris County, a pictorial history assembled by Curator/Outreach Director Linda Forgosh features photographs from the exhibitions as well as numerous others. This book was published by Arcadia Press in 2007, and is available from the JHSMW office for $18 per copy.
